SCROLL DOWN FOR THE ENGLISH VERSION

In occasione delle Giornate Europee del Patrimonio, ci sarà la presentazione del libro “Lo splendore nella forma. La scultura negli spazi della memoria” a cura di Mauro Felicori e Franco Sborgi, che si terrà  sabato 29 settembre alle ore 16 ai Granai di Villa Mimbelli a Livorno. A seguire si potrà visitare l’esposizione di immagini e oggetti relativi alla storia dei cimiteri storici della città.  In particolare, l’Associazione Livorno delle Nazioni ha fornito la documentazione sull’Antico Cimitero degli Inglesi.
La mattina alle ore 10, l’Associazione Livorno delle Nazioni curerà la presentazione dei due Cimiteri Inglesi di Livorno presso l’aula multimediale della Misericordia di fronte all’Antico Cimitero degli Inglesi, in Via Verdi 59, seguita alle ore 11 da una visita guidata al cimitero stesso. Il sito rimarrà aperto alle visite fino alle ore 13. Verranno trattati gli aspetti storici ed artistici dell’Antico Cimitero con l’ausilio di documenti e immagini.inedite.
(Per trovare l’aula multimediale occorre entrare dal cancellino della Misericordia di Via Verdi 59, seguire il muro dell’edificio e girare a destra. Il primo portone è quello dell’aula. Per coloro che verranno solo a visitare il cimitero, nell’orario 11-13, l’ingresso è situato proprio di fronte alla facciata della Chiesa di San Giorgio, sempre all’interno della strada privata della Misericordia in Via Verdi 59).

European Heritage Days 2012: the book “Lo splendore nella forma. La scultura negli spazi della memoria“, edited by Mauro Felicori and Franco Sborgi, will be presented on September 29th at 4pm at the Granai di Villa Mimbelli in Livorno. After the presentation there will be an exhibition of images, documents and objects relating to the several historical cemeteries of Livorno.  In particular, the Livorno delle Nazioni Association has provided the documentation regarding the Old and New English Cemeteries.
On the same day, at 10am, Livorno delle Nazioni will be giving a presentation about the two English cemeteries in the Misericordia’s multimedia room opposite the Old English Cemetery, at Via Verdi 59.
After the presentation, at 11am, there will be a guided tour of the Old Cemetery. The site will stay open to visitors until 1pm. Many interesting documents and facts about these two cemeteries will be discussed during the presentation.
(To find the Misericordia’s ‘multimedia room’, enter through the small gate at the entrance to the Misericordia at Via Verdi 59, follow the building on the righthand side, and then turn right. The first door you come to is the one for the Multimedia room. For those intending only to visit the cemetery, between 11am-1pm, the entrance is just opposite St. George’s Church,  at Via Verdi 59).

VERSIONE ITALIANA IN BASSO

Today we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Peter Earle, former Professor at the London School of Economics and Emeritus Reader in Economic History at the University of London at the Old English Cemetery of Livorno. He is presently writing a book on the ties between Livorno and Liverpool in the 18th c. and he is specifically interested in the Earle & Hodgson firm and their networks.

We were glad to show him and his brother Robert some of the tombs related to their research and to have a chance to promote the unacknowledged history of the cemetery. Hopefully the cemetery and our association will have a small place in his next book!

The Uniate-Greek church of Livorno reclaims its statues (well, copies of…)

The Uniate-Greek Church of Livorno (in Via della Madonna), property of the Arch-confraternity of the Purification, is returning to its former glory. The near-finished restoration has replaced the original allegoric statues of the Innocence and Mansuetude, removed 60 years ago, with fiberglass copies. The originals were sequestered when the church, heavily damaged by the Allied bombing of Livorno, was partially rebuilt and given to the confraternity. The statues were then placed inside the Purification cemetery, owned by the same brotherhood; we hope they will be properly preserved and and duly respected as works of art in their own right.

Torna a splendere la chiesa dei Greci Uniti di Livorno, oggi proprietà dell’Arciconfraternita della Purificazione. Le operazioni di restauro, ormai prossime alla conclusione, hanno consentito di collocare in facciata le copie in vetroresina delle statue allegoriche dell’Innocenza e della Mansuetudine, i cui originali furono rimossi circa sessant’anni fa, quando l’antico edificio, gravemente danneggiato dagli eventi bellici, fu in gran parte ricostruito e affidato alla Purificazione.
Attualmente le sculture originali sono conservate presso il cimitero della stessa Arciconfraternita; è naturalmente auspicabile una loro adeguata conservazione e valorizzazione.
